How long state lemon laws protect a Honda
With 3 years / 36,000 miles of basic coverage, your Honda’s warranty usually outlasts its lemon law window. A two-year state closes the window with 1 year of warranty to go; a one-year state, with 2 years. Repairs in that gap are free, but they rarely count toward a buyback.
| State window | Jurisdictions | Honda basic warranty at that point |
|---|---|---|
| The warranty term | New Hampshire, Vermont | Window lasts the full 3 years / 36,000 miles |
| Three years | 1 | about the same time the basic warranty ends |
| Two years | 21 | 1 year of basic coverage still left |
| 18 months | 3 | 18 months of basic coverage still left |
| One year | 23 | 2 years of basic coverage still left |
Many windows also stop at 12,000 to 24,000 miles, long before the 36,000-mile limit on a Honda warranty. Find your state’s exact rule in our state guides, or check your Honda repair history against your state’s window.
Honda’s dispute program
Honda’s booklet describes three steps: talk to the dealership’s management, then contact Honda Automobile Customer Service, then ask the National Center for Dispute Settlement (NCDS) to review the case. You can file with NCDS at any time by calling 877-545-0055 or writing to P.O. Box 515831, Dallas, TX 75251-5831.
The NCDS decision is not binding on you unless you accept it, and Honda will follow a decision you accept. Disputes are generally resolved within 40 days (47 if you have not contacted Honda first). Honda says it does not require NCDS before a lawsuit, though some state laws may.
Honda’s arbitration clause
The 2025 booklet includes an Agreement to Arbitrate: disputes with Honda are decided by a single arbitrator through the American Arbitration Association, not a judge or jury, though you may take an individual dispute to small claims court. Before arbitration you must send written notice to Honda’s Office of the General Counsel and allow 60 days to resolve it. Apart from your filing fees up to $250, Honda says it pays the AAA fees.
You can opt out within 30 days after delivery by sending a letter with your name, VIN and intent to opt out to Honda’s Office of the General Counsel, 1919 Torrance Blvd., Mail Stop CHI-5, Torrance, CA 90501. If you do not, the agreement is binding.

Things Honda owners should know
- If you took delivery in the last 30 days, decide whether to opt out of arbitration now.
- Acura, Honda’s luxury brand, uses its own booklet and also appears on NCDS’s client list.
- Honda sometimes runs special adjustment programs that pay for repairs after the warranty. Ask the dealer, and keep the paperwork: those repairs can still matter as evidence.
What to do if your Honda is a lemon
- Within 30 days after delivery, decide whether to mail the arbitration opt-out letter to Honda’s Office of the General Counsel.
- Raise the problem with the dealership’s management and get each visit on a repair order with your complaint and mileage.
- Call Honda Automobile Customer Service at (800) 999-1009 and send written notice; our letter generator drafts it.
- Ask NCDS (877-545-0055) to review the case. Its decision binds you only if you accept it.
- If you go further, follow your state’s lemon law deadline; without an opt-out, Honda can choose AAA arbitration instead of court.
